Flies (Musca domestica):  Generally known as house fly, the Most common type of house fly in an Indian household. They are more popular as carriers of diseases. House flies can survive in any environment to grow to large numbers. The Indian house fly can savor any food ranging from humans to pets to animals to rotten food and even feces. This habit makes them the deadliest pests on earth compared to mosquitoes. Flies spread diseases because of their breeding and feeding habits. Bacteria from where the fly usually feed on would get stuck on their mouthparts and footpads eventually spreading onto places they land on. Imagine if it’s exposed food that you are about to eat. House flies are not only nuisance pests while buzzing around homes, but they are potential disease carriers. They have a short lifespan, but they can quickly reproduce in large numbers, leading to large house fly populations if not identified and effectively controlled. Housefly eggs resemble small grains of rice.

Type of Flies:

Fruit Fly (Drosophila species): As the name suggests, the favorite food of fruit flies is fruits and fermenting residue places. Even this winged creature find mention among the common types of house flies in India. They are also found in fruit orchards, vegetable gardens, and breweries. A key identifying character of a Fruit Fly is its bright red eyes.

Bluebottle fly (Calliphora vomitoria): Bluebottle flies (also known as Blowfly), These insects typically fly inside through the doors or windows of homes with a ready food supply. Bluebottle flies in homes can transmit diseases and bacteria between hosts. The risk increases if these pests feed on foods that humans consume. Bluebottle flies are attracted to pet feces and dead animals and they are known carriers of diseases like Conjunctivitis, Dysentery, and Food Poisoning.

Drain Fly (Psychodidae): The title indicates their survival patterns. Their other names are sewage fly, moth fly, and drain fly. If these flies are present in the house there is almost certainly a slow or clogged drain. Drain flies gather, mate, and lay eggs in moisture or standing water. Putting off regular cleaning and maintenance of these areas may attract the pests and offer them a place to feed and develop. Once inside, drain flies may plug pipes and spread bacteria from the filth they live in, possibly contaminating food in the process. Drain Fly even though they live in filth, is not known to spread any disease to humans.

Flesh Fly (Family - Sarcophagidae): Flesh flies look like house flies, but are generally larger than house flies. Flesh flies don't often enter houses or food-handling establishments in large numbers. Adult flesh flies are rarely problems as disease carriers and pose little threat to human or livestock health. These pests eat nasty stuff, but they do not bite people. The female flesh fly lays her eggs on open wounds, meat scraps, or dog excrement. Flesh flies primarily breed in animal carcasses. Flesh flies, as well as blowflies and bottle flies, are the first insects at a dead animal carcass.
